The Children’s Defense Fund Freedom Schools program provides summer support for children and families in some of Huntsville City’s most economically challenged communities and is particularly aimed at helping to prevent summer learning loss among children attending the Huntsville City School System’s Title I schools.
The model curriculum used during the summer program has five essential components:
Through a partnership with the Huntsville Chapter of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), HNUSR will use the CDF Freedom Schools program to boost student motivation to read, generate more positive attitudes towards learning, and connect the needs of children and families to the resources of their communities.
